So I am having a solo exhibition entitled The Knowing Silence. This is my BFA thesis, and I am both nervous and excited! It will be held at the Kansas City Artists Coalition Underground Gallery, with the opening reception on April 13 (this Friday!) from 6-9pm. It will be displayed through the 27th of this month.
This body of work is made to help me heal from loss and emotional trauma. I utilize different forms of mark-making in order to create ambiance; gestural swoops and contours outline or separate the compositions, and signify swift, unchangeable decisions. Splatters and grainy streaks highlight feelings of anxiety, and subtle shades of color mixed with black act as the great mediator between conscious manipulation and loss of control. Washes allow me to relinquish control of the picture plane.
The Knowing Silence focuses on aspects of the grieving process, namely the duality between sorrow and healing, and the confrontal emotional purging involved in catharsis. Because these are abstract images, they encourage the beholder to contemplate the things that they cannot see or grasp.
The gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 11-5pm. The KCAC is located at 201 Wyandotte St, Kansas City, MO 64105.
Please come by if you are in the neighborhood! I would really appreciate the support!
